Looking through in spite of fog
On Wednesday, January 16th, the mayor of Bremen Dr.Henning Scherf visited the Container Terminal Bremerhaven to get an insight into the job and the development of NORTH SEA TERMINAL BERMERHAVEN (NTB). Since April 1999 NTB is managing the CT 3 in the sea town, with growing success. Partners of NTB are the shipping company MAERSK SEALAND and the terminal operator EUROGATE. Gerhard Wahlers (Managing Director NTB), Emanuel Schiffer (CEO EUROGATE Group) and Hans Georg Andersen (Managing Director MAERSK Deutschland GmbH) personally informed the Bremen major Dr. Henning Scherf on the bridge of the Susan Maersk about the development of the terminal during the last three years. Normally from the bridge (approx. 164 ft. above the sea level) you will have avel) you will have a breathtaking view of the whole terminal and the outer river Weser. But on January 16th there was nothing to see than fog. So the explanations by the terminal operators, completed with a computer presentation gave the virtual view and looking through. Target of this presentation was, to explain to Dr. Henning Scherf the urgency of the planned and needed extension of the terminal (CT 3A and CT 4), of a further deepening of the outer river Weser as well as of an expansion of the turning cycle. NTB Managing Director Gerhard Wahlers emphasized, that this all would be needed to serve the coming container ships of the new generations and with this also the main customer MAERSK SEALAND in the future. Only like this way Bremerhaven can hold its own against the European competitors, especially Rotterdam and Antwerp. The NTB turnover, in 2001 more than 80 % higher as expected (678.090 TEU), will increase sharply till 2004 (expected today: 1.880.000 TEU). This also will mean, that more employees would be needed on the terminal, an important argument in Bremerhaven. Today the number of staff on the NORTH SEA TERMINAL isTH SEA TERMINAL is 321, plus approx. 200 external manpower (techniques and service). A blockade of the terminal extension could mean a new orientation of important customers to efficient terminals just as Rotterdam and Antwerp. So the extensions are important for job creation and job guarantee. |
